Brief history of Povljana

Povljana, in today's form, dates from beginning of the 15th century. It was originally located about 5 km SE from its current position but was abandoned in the late 14th century for unknown reasons. Old area, where Povljana used to be, is now called Stara (old) Povljana.

In time of relocation of Povljana, Benedictine abbey with church of st. Nikola and salt pans has already existed.

The Church of st. Juraj, which is now parish church of Povljana, is built in 17th century. Lots of people worked for the land owners from Pag at that time, so they started to inhabit Povljana that they can be closer to land.

History of tourism in Povljana

Being a agricultural village, tourism in Povljana started very late. Serious beginning was in the late seventies of the last century when several habitants converted their land from agricultural in construction sites. Mali (little) Dubrovnik, tourist settlement in Povljana, was finished few years after.

Construction of Mali Dubrovnik started to attract many tourist so development of Povljana and its environment followed. Pine forest was planted which now looks a lot older than 25, mole was built, new cottages started to appear every year and Povljana started to take its today's form.

Most changes happened in late nineties when the waterfronts were built and center of the Povljana was renewed.

Povljana beaches

Povljana offers all kind of beaches but sand and gravel prevails.

Sandy beach, still often referred to as main beech, is actually very rare for this part of Adrtiatic and it's the oldest beach in Povljana. Being so old it lacks some modern comforts like showers or deck chairs and is recommended for people witch like more privacy. Sandy beach and hill rising above it is a good recipe for romantic holiday.

 

Originally being small and pebble, lot of beaches were turned into gravel and now makes a majority of beaches in Povljana. These beaches are very well equipped and offers all kind of services, they are recommended for younger people or family holiday.

 

Lot of services on the beach, like parking or showers, is free of charge in Povljana (for now) which is unusual for destinations in Croatia.

Restaurants in Povljana

Coffee bars used to dominate in Povljana but lot of different restaurants start to show lately. The newest and the rarest type in Povljana are sandwich and fast-food restaurants, then comes pizza restaurants and traditional restaurants. Fair prices prevail in all restaurants in Povljana, and they naturally depend on the type of restaurant you choose.

Sport & activities in Povljana

New tennis courts and beach volley courts offers the most sport fun in Povljana. Two soccer fields also contributes to Povljana sport offer and that is the most of team sports that Povljana has to offer.

Cycling is very developed here and there are many cycling routes around Povljana. Lot of people which spend their holiday on bicycles pass through Povljana, but you can rent a bicycle or a scooter in Povljana so a short trip in countryside is possible.

Walking and jogging are still the most usual activities and the new waterfronts are appropriate for them.
